You do not need to arrive knowing exactly what you want to work on.
People come to therapy for all sorts of reasons. You might be struggling with something specific, or have a more general sense of being stuck, overwhelmed or dissatisfied with how things are going. You can figure that out together.
Therapy is not separate from the rest of your life, so sessions are also interested in what your day-to-day life actually looks like and how it is working for you.
- Burnout and work-related stress
- Anxiety and feeling overwhelmed
- Self-esteem and confidence
- Relationships and recurring relationship patterns
- Experiences related to ADHD, autism and neurodivergence
- Difficult or traumatic experiences
- Loss and significant changes in life
- Feeling stuck or wanting to make changes
- Balancing your own needs with work, relationships and family
Therapy and coaching, shaped around you.
Integrative therapy
Emma draws on different therapeutic approaches rather than working within one particular model. Different people need different things from therapy, and what you need may also change over time. You might explore past experiences and patterns, work with thoughts and emotions in the present, or pay attention to what you notice in your body. Therapy is something you shape together, based on what feels most relevant and helpful to you.
Personal Consultancy Model
This brings counselling and coaching together, and gives a way of thinking about what kind of support you might need at different stages. Sometimes the work is about understanding and processing what has happened, sometimes it is about recognising patterns or gaining a different perspective, and sometimes the focus shifts towards what you want to change and how you might begin to do that.
Occupational therapy background
Knowing what you would like to be different does not necessarily make it easy to put into practice. Together you can look at how your routines, relationships, work, environment, habits and demands on your time and energy might support or get in the way of the changes you want to make, and find realistic ways of moving forward.
Capacity States
A framework Emma developed to help people recognise changes in their energy, stress and capacity, understand what influences these, and work out what they might need at different times. Tools like this are not a programme you have to follow, they are simply additional ways of making sense of your experience and supporting you outside the therapy room.

Emma Sheppard, counsellor and coach.
Emma is an Integrative Counsellor and Coach with a background in Occupational Therapy. She has worked in healthcare for more than 15 years, across mental health, physical health, social care, learning disability and autism services, supporting people through periods of change, difficulty and uncertainty.
She came to counselling and coaching after becoming increasingly interested in the conversations that sit underneath practical support, how our experiences shape us, why we can find ourselves repeating the same patterns, and what helps people make changes that feel meaningful to them. Emma values difference and does not believe there is a single right way to live, work, relate to others or make sense of ourselves.

Counselling & coaching questions
What is the difference between counselling and coaching?
Counselling often focuses on understanding and processing what has happened and the patterns you notice, while coaching focuses more on what you want to change and how to get there. Emma brings the two together, so sessions can move between them as your needs change.
Do I need to know what I want to talk about?
No. You do not need to arrive knowing exactly what you want to work on. You can figure that out together in your first sessions.
How long are sessions and what do they cost?
Each session is 50 minutes: £95 online, or £115 face to face at our Bermondsey Street clinic, London SE1.
Can I book now?

Is counselling suitable in a crisis?
Counselling is not an emergency service. If you need urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, contact your GP or go to A&E. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999.
